Dr. Yuko Palesch is Distinguished University Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Public Health Sciences and co-Director of the Data Coordination Unit at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston. Prior to her long tenure at MUSC, she worked at the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in Bethesda, MD. She received her BA degree in biology from Cornell University, MS in biostatistics from University of Pittsburgh, and PhD in statistics from the George Washington University. Dr. Palesch has been the PI or co-investigator of statistics and data coordination center grants for numerous NINDS-funded clinical trials for acute neurological conditions, such as stroke and TBI. The trials range from Phase I dose-finding to large multicenter and international Phase III (e.g., ALIAS Parts 1 and 2, IMS III, POINT, ProTECT, and ATACH II). In addition, she is a co-PI of the Statistics and Data Management Center for the Neurological Emergencies Treatment Trial (NETT) Network and a co-PI of the National Data Management Center for the NIH StrokeNet. She has served on a variety of NIH grant review panels, as well on Data and Safety Monitoring Boards for NIH- and industry-funded clinical trials. Her statistical research interests are in efficient clinical trials design (e.g., futility design, randomization methods), and in statistical analysis topics (e.g., handling of missing data). She has over 140 peer-reviewed publications both in statistical methodology and clinical trials.
